10 Countries With The Highest Annual Divorce Rates


Known by some as the Land of Broken Marriages, Belarus has an unenviably high annual divorce rate of 3.4 per 1,000 people.


Arab countries in general are seeing an increase in their annual divorce rates. In particular, Egypt saw its rate skyrocket “by 83 percent between 1996 and 2017.”

United States

Although the United States has one of the top 20 divorce rates in the world, its rate has dropped substantially in recent years, down to 2.3 per 1,000 people.


The importance of marriage has continued to decline in Finland over the last 100 years. Divorce rates, though still high, have stabilized in the Scandinavian country at 2.4 per 1,000 people.


In 2021, the Libyan prime minister sought to promote marriage by providing a financial incentive to young couples tying the knot.


For such a happy country, Sweden boasts a relatively high divorce rate of 2.5 per 1,000 people. The reason? Divorce in this Scandinavian country is “cheap, easy, and safe.”


For such a small country, Liechtenstein has a rather high annual divorce rate of 2.6 per 1,000 people.


Even though Cyprus is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, it has a high annual divorce rate of 2.6 per 1,000 people.


Lithuania has one of the top marriage rates in the European Union. But with rising marriages often comes a rise in divorces.


Like Lithuania, Latvia boasts one of the highest marriage rates in the European Union. It also follows suit with one of the highest annual divorce rates at 2.7 per 1,000 people.
